Earlier in December, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that Ukraine is suffering significantly higher losses compared to Russia, which might prompt Kiev to reduce the conscription age to 18 and implement stricter mobilization measures.
Over 365,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of Russia's special military operation, with total Ukrainian losses nearing 977,315, according to Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
Speaking at a briefing for military attachés, Gerasimov highlighted that all military objectives set by the Russian leadership for 2024 had been achieved. He emphasized the experience gained by Russian forces across various branches during the operation.
“The objectives of the special military operation will undoubtedly be achieved,” he stated.
Gerasimov criticized Western military support to Ukraine, asserting that it hinders peace efforts and directly involves NATO in the conflict.
"Arms supplies to Ukraine by the West undermine negotiations and will have long-term negative consequences," he said.
He also outlined Russia’s deep understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of Western-made weapons, emphasizing the focus on stabilizing global and regional security.

Strengthening Arctic Defenses

With NATO increasing its presence in the Arctic following Finland and Sweden’s NATO accession, Gerasimov described the region as a growing geopolitical flashpoint.
“The destructive activities of the US and other NATO countries in the Arctic are intensifying,” he stated.
Russia is modernizing military infrastructure in the northern latitudes and boosting combat readiness in response to NATO’s activities. This includes efforts to counter perceived threats to Russia's economic activities in the Arctic, exacerbated by Western sanctions and restrictions.

S-500 Air Defense Advancements

In aerospace defense, Russia is nearing completion of its first regiment equipped with the S-500 Prometheus air defense system, capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles and strategic ballistic targets. The S-500 system can detect and engage up to 10 supersonic targets simultaneously, with a range of 600 kilometers. These advancements reflect Russia’s commitment to strengthening its strategic missile defense capabilities.

Nuclear Deterrence and Doctrine Updates

Highlighting Russia’s nuclear doctrine, Gerasimov reaffirmed that the nation's deterrence threshold is determined solely by its strategic needs.
"The so-called deterrence threshold is not defined by any of our country's international obligations," he stated.
He contrasted this with the US nuclear doctrine, which he argued has a lower threshold for weapon use. In November, Russia updated its nuclear doctrine to treat aggression by a non-nuclear state supported by a nuclear state as a joint attack, a stance reinforced by recent escalations involving US-supplied ATACMS missiles fired by Ukraine at Russian targets.
