BAKU (Sputnik) - Russia and NATO should avoid direct confrontation at all costs, as the conflict between them would lead to catastrophic consequences, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in an interview with VGTRK and RIA Novosti.
"I would like to express hope that such apparent confrontation between NATO and Russia will not come to pass," Aliyev said during the interview conducted by Dmitry Kiselev, the director general of the Rossiya Segodnya international media group, a Sputnik parent company.
Everyone realizes the "catastrophic consequences" of such conflict for all countries, especially for those that border the region, the president added.
"To imagine such a scenario, that NATO and Russia will meet in a hot war, is like imagining a world apocalypse," Aliyev said.

Baku Hopes Change in US Administration Results in Shift of Geopolitical Guidelines

Azerbaijan hopes that the change in the US administration will also bring a change in the country's foreign policy guidelines, Aliyev stated.
"I hope that the change of the US administration will also be a change of foreign policy guidelines," Aliyev told Dmitry Kiselev.
The hope for such changes stems from "the political experience gained by [US President-elect Donald] Trump during his first term and the statements made by him and his team during the election campaign and afterwards," Aliyev added.
"I believe that Washington, Moscow, and other capitals will have enough wisdom to avoid such a nightmarish scenario [of a Russia-NATO conflict]," the president said.
Nevertheless, Baku is pleased with the development of relations with Moscow and expects to maintain positive dynamics in 2025, the president noted.
"We are happy with how our relations are developing, we value them. And I am sure that this positive dynamic will be maintained next year," Aliyev said.
