The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) plans to transform its Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) in Zanzibar into Africa's leading marine science research center by August 2025, the university's Chancellor Jakaya Kikwete said while visiting the site. The initiative aims to support sustainable resource management, address climate change impacts on coastal communities, and establish Tanzania as a leader in marine science research across East Africa, filling a critical regional gap, Kikwete explained. The IMS will focus on developing African solutions for African challenges by training local scientists and conducting cutting-edge research, the chancellor reportedly added.

An $8 million World Bank-funded renovation and expansion project will create modern facilities, increasing student capacity and boosting the country's blue economy, according to local media.
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) plans to transform its Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) in Zanzibar into Africa's leading marine
science research center by August 2025, the university's Chancellor Jakaya Kikwete said while visiting the site.
"What's happening here as it [the Institute] is growing is that it is becoming the largest marine science research center in the region. I don't think there's a center as big as this one," the UDSM quoted Kikwete as saying.
The initiative aims to support sustainable resource management, address
climate change impacts on coastal communities, and establish Tanzania as a leader in marine science research across East Africa, filling a critical regional gap, Kikwete explained.
The IMS will focus on developing African solutions for African challenges by training local scientists and conducting cutting-edge research, the chancellor reportedly added.
