UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - On Sunday, the Israeli prime minister ordered the Israel Defense Forces to occupy the buffer zone in Golan Heights in the southwest of Syria. In 1981, Israel unilaterally annexed the region, a move not recognized internationally. The UN and most countries consider Golan Heights Syrian territory under Israeli occupation.
Syria, "on behalf" of the current government, sent a letter to the UN Security Council and to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres with an appeal to stop Israeli aggression, Syrian Permanent Representative to the UN Qusay al-Dahhak told journalists.
"We addressed identical letters today upon instructions from the Syrian government to the Secretary General, to the Security Council, condemning this Israeli attack, asking the UN, calling upon the UN and the Security Council to shoulder the responsibility in maintaining international peace and security and to stop, put an end to the Israeli attacks on Syria," the Syrian diplomat said.
Al-Dahhak also called for not allowing Israel to benefit from the transition that the Syrians are doing now in their country for their occupation agenda, as well as for compelling Israel to respect international law, international security council resolutions and the UN General Assembly's resolutions on ending the Israeli occupation of Syrian territories.
