On Thursday, South African Airways canceled about 60% of its flights after most of its pilots went on strike over pay. Interim CEO John Lamola told local media that the airline would not be able to handle further disruptions to its nascent financial recovery if the strike went "beyond two or three days."
South African Airways (SAA) pilots have ended a
strike that disrupted nearly half of the airline's flights on its first day, according to South African broadcaster eNCA.
The strike, which began Thursday following a breakdown in pay negotiations, was suspended after SAA reached an agreement with the SAA Pilots Association and the National Transport Movement.
While SAA has yet to officially comment, eNCA reports that further talks are planned to address broader working
conditions.
The strike reportedly resulted in the cancellation of international flights to Perth and Sao Paulo, and significantly reduced domestic flight operations.
