The conflict in Sudan, which broke out in April 2023 and has seen clashes between the Sudanese army and the rebel Rapid Support Forces, has left an estimated 12,260 people dead and more than 33,000 injured, according to UN data.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdellati discussed with his Sudanese counterpart the support for governmental institutions and people of the country, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement. On Tuesday, the Egyptian minister visited Port Sudan in eastern Sudan.
"During the meeting, Foreign Minister Abdellati underscored the historical ties between the two countries and the two peoples, stressing Egypt’s belief that the future of Sudan is defined by the Sudanese people only without any interference," the statement read.
Earlier, the Egyptian minister said during the meeting with UN Special Envoy for Sudan Ramtane Lamamra that Cairo is involved in regional and international efforts aimed at reaching a cease-fire and settlement in Sudan "to end the suffering of the Sudanese people" and to safeguard "Sudan's interests, sovereignty and territorial integrity."
