The UK agreed to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius and provide annual financial support to the country, but will retain control of the US-UK base on the island of Diego Garcia for an initial period of 99 years, according to the Mauritius-UK deal signed on October 3.
Recently appointed Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam demanded an independent review of Chagos island deal with the UK at the parliamentary debates' session.
"I wish to inform the house that I have asked for an independent review of the confidential draft agreement agreed so far," he said.
Last Monday, Ramgoolam met with the UK National Security adviser Jonathan Powell to discuss
the proposals of the agreement as the progress made in and the contents of the negotiations between the two sides during the past two years were unknown to the new government, the prime minister noted.
"I have had discussions with local officials and external legal advisers since my assumption of office regarding the status of the negotiations," he added.
Last Thursday, the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly spoke in favor of the agreement, describing it as a "a good deal".
"The Chagos deal is a good deal. It secures the base that’s in the vital interests of the US and the UK. And we are already engaging with the new administration in Mauritius as to how we take that forward," media quoted Starmer as saying.
