WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The White House said on Monday that there is no Cold War taking place in Africa and the United States does not seek to make countries choose between it and China or Russia.
From December 2-4, President Biden is traveling to Angola.
"There is no Cold War on the continent. We're not asking countries to choose between the US and Russia and China. We're simply looking for reliable, sustainable, verifiable investment opportunities that the people of Angola and the people of the continent can rely on," National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby told reporters.
Despite these statements, one can recall examples of US pressure on African countries to choose sides.
Still, during a congressional hearing in mid-May prior to the South African election later that month, US Assistant Secretary of State Molly Phee stated that if a new government is elected in South Africa, the United States will keep voicing concerns about the country's links to China and Russia.
For example, in December 2022, the Russian vessel Lady R arrived at the Simon's Town naval base in South Africa, leading to US Ambassador Reuben Brigety publicly accusing South Africa of alleged supplying weapons to Russia for use in the Ukraine conflict despite its neutral stance on Moscow's special military operation.
However, in addition to potentially cutting off Pretoria from the African Growth and Opportunity Act preferential trade program, a bill to evaluate Washington's ties with South Africa was submitted in the US Congress in April this year. According to the bill, Pretoria is allegedly fortifying its connections with "malign actors," including China, Russia, and Palestinian Hamas.
