CAIRO (Sputnik) - On Sunday, Iranian news agency Fars reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus to discuss the latest developments in Syria, and an increase in terrorist activity in particular.
Bashar Assad has emphasized the importance of support from allies and friends in the fight against terrorism in the country during a meeting with Araghchi, the Syrian leader's office said on Sunday.
"President Assad explained that the Syrian people have been able to resist terrorism in all forms in recent years and are now more determined than ever to eradicate it, pointing out the importance of support from allies and friends in combating terrorist attacks backed from abroad," the statement read.
Araghchi, for his part, said that Syria will defeat the terrorist groups this time, just as it has done in the past, adding that the recent resurgence of terrorist activity is part of a conspiracy by enemies to destabilize and undermine security in the Middle East, according to the Iranian government.

Syrian Forces Regain Control of Key Locations in Northern Hama, Pushing Back Terrorists
The Syrian armed forces command said on Saturday that dozens of Syrian soldiers were killed in recent days in combat operations against terrorist groups in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, and that the army had regrouped to save civilian lives and prepare for a counterattack. Syrian media have reported, citing military sources, that these were terrorists from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham*.
The armed conflict in Syria started in 2011 between the government of Assad and various armed groups, including terrorists. Daesh*, also known as ISIS, was declared defeated in late 2017, and Damascus has since continued raids to wipe out remaining cells, chiefly in the country's northwest.
