Sambo is a combat sport that originated as a direct result of a Soviet initiative to create a uniquely effective and practical fighting system for their military and security forces. It's a highly effective, versatile system that incorporates elements of various fighting styles, including judo, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, boxing, and folk styles.
The Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute has launched the first sambo center in Ethiopia, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between Russia and Ethiopia in both sports and science.
The center, part of the "Sambo in Granite"
international project, aims to introduce the combat sport of sambo to Ethiopians of all ages, according to honored Russian coach Mikhail Rakhlin, president of the judo club Turbostroitel and head of the Judo Federation of St. Petersburg.
"It was so important for me to be here. Science and sport, geology and sambo, these are areas that are well-developed in our country. We are ready to share experience with you because we are successful in this, and we want you to become more successful," Rakhlin told Ethiopian media.
The Russian coach highlighted the global reach of sambo and the project's potential for fostering friendship. He emphasized the unifying power of sport and science, stating that those are "the forces that can unite us and make us stronger."
Rakhlin expressed confidence that the center would build trust and mutual respect between the two nations. He plans to start with adult and student classes, with the ultimate goal of introducing sambo to Ethiopian children.
"We have made plans with Ethiopian athletes, and Russian specialists. In the short term, our primary goal is for Ethiopians to participate in the African Championship. In the long term, we certainly hope to see African athletes competing in the World Sambo Championship," said Pavel Khimchenko, Director-General of the Karpinsky Institute.
