A rally in support of Russia and its President Vladimir Putin has taken place in the city of Port Sudan, the temporary capital of Sudan, according to local media and footage posted online. The rally in front of the Russian Embassy in Port Sudan was reportedly attended by more than 800 representatives of virtually different Sudanese state, tribal and civil organizations.The Sudanese reportedly sang the popular Russian song "Katyusha" and thanked the Eurasian country and its president for supporting Sudan at the international and regional levels.Moreover, during the rally, Russian Ambassador to Sudan Andrey Chernovol was honored with a certificate by tribal and civil organizations in recognition of his country's support for the Sudanese people during difficult times.Last week, Russia blocked in the UN Security Council a resolution proposed by the UK on the ceasefire in Sudan, which caused a storm of negative emotions from the West, but only words of gratitude from the Government of Sudan and its people, who said that the resolution violated the sovereignty of the country.Sudan's Ambassador to Russia, Mohammed Elghazali Sirrag, told Sputnik that Russia's veto of the UK-proposed UN resolution is a "strong message of the Russian government's solidarity with Sudan and a message to the international community to respect the sovereignty of countries and not to interfere in their internal affairs".The conflict in Sudan, which has seen clashes between the Sudanese army and the rebel Rapid Support Forces, has left more than a dozen thousand people dead and more than 33,000 injured, according to UN estimates. The UN has warned of the devastating consequences of the conflict, including the world's worst displacement crisis and the looming threat of famine.
