Namibia's presidential and parliamentary elections officially began Wednesday morning. President Nangolo Mbumba, who succeeded Hage Geingob, who died of cancer in February, is not running for the country's top job, while 21 parties are vying for seats in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.
A member of the international observer mission to Namibia's recent
presidential and parliamentary elections has praised the process as peaceful and transparent. Gennady Ordenov, a Senator of the Russian Federation, highlighted the calm atmosphere and high voter turnout observed during his visits to numerous polling stations across the country.
"According to our assessments, the elections are taking place in a calm, peaceful environment and at a good organizational level." Senator Ordenov told Sputnik Africa in an interview.
The Russian politician highlighted the high
voter turnout observed during his visits to numerous polling stations across the country.
"The elections are proceeding in a calm, transparent, and free manner. I have not seen any violations, any excesses that could affect the will of the voters. Voting is conducted in accordance with the generally recognized international standards," he said.
Senator Ordenov, who delivered a personal message from Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matvienko to Namibian National Council President Lucas Sinimbo Muha, noted the strong and developing inter-parliamentary ties between Russia and Namibia.
"Our inter-parliamentary ties are developing dynamically, including through the friendship groups established in the legislative bodies of our parliaments, which are now being implemented on a regular basis," he stated. "We noted that the mutual deployment of observers by Moscow and Windhoek during the key electoral processes has become a good tradition."
During meetings with Muha and National Assembly Speaker Peter Katjavivi, Ordenov noted the appreciation for Russia's historical contributions to
Namibia's statehood and the desire to strengthen friendly ties across various sectors, including trade, economics, socio-political affairs, healthcare training, and other areas of cooperation.
