MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On September 25, Chadian Ambassador to Russia Adam Bechir told Sputnik that Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby had decided to release the detained Russians, including Shugaley. He also stated that the detainees would be released and handed over to Russian authorities.
Three Russian nationals, including sociologist Maxim Shugaley, and one Belarusian, who spent almost two months in detention in Chad, have been freed and arrived in Moscow, Shugaley's colleagues told Sputnik on Saturday.
"The three Russian nationals and one Belarusian who were detained and kept in Chad have now been freed and arrived in Moscow this evening," one of the colleagues of the Russian sociologist said.
In late September, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that it was taking steps to ensure the release of three Russians and one Belarusian who were detained in Chad on September 19. Shugaley’s colleagues told Sputnik that he contacted them on September 19 saying he had not been allowed to cross the border after landing at the airport in N'Djamena.
