BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006. Russia's 2024 presidency of BRICS began with the joining of new members. Adding to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The latter has not formalized its membership, but participates in group events.
The growing role of BRICS reinforces the importance of the Global South, Russian Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large and BRICS Sous-Sherpa Pavel Knyazev said on the sidelines of the Research Conference "The Future of Diplomacy and Diplomatic Services."
"At the moment, the potential is largely distributed in favor of new centers of power, and new centers are recruited in Asia, Africa, America and the Middle East," Knyazev said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the role and authority of the BRICS association in the world continue to strengthen. He noted Russia advocates for the formation of a fair world order without illegitimate sanctions and restrictions.
In late October, Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs Professor Eghosa Osaghae told Sputnik Africa that BRICS represents a platform of hope for the countries of the Global South, seeking an alternative world order, and since the BRICS membership offers opportunities for stable development, Nigeria is interested in joining the association.
