Nigeria Takes Steps to Promote Local Values Through Cartoon Content
19:00 12.11.2024 (Updated: 15:24 27.11.2024) The Nigerian government is taking steps to replace foreign cartoons with locally produced content that reflects the nation’s cultural values and promotes positive societal norms. On Global South Pole, the host discusses this transformative initiative with a government official, exploring its potential impact on children and the creative industry.
The Nigerian government aims to replace foreign cartoons with locally produced content to foster a stronger sense of national identity and pride among children, Dr. Mustafa Adedeji Tukur, Director, Lagos state Directorate, National Orientation Agency of Nigeria tells Sputnik Africa.
He explains that the agency has embarked on a “national project”, an initiative aimed at addressing the lack of a strong national identity in Nigeria.
“The agency has now signed a partnership agreement with local content producers, that is cartoon animators, so that by the time we have enough local contents in terms of cartoons and animations on our TV [television] stations, these children will grow and abide by their values,” Dr. Tukur explains.
The Nigerian official further asserts that cultivating a strong sense of Nigerian values and culture involves a deliberate effort to limit the prevalence of foreign content in society. He sees this as an essential step toward fostering a more unified cultural identity.
