The people of Moldova will go to the polls on Sunday to vote in the second round of the country's presidential election. Incumbent President Maia Sandu secured 42.45% of the votes in the first round on October 20. Her main challenger, former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, came in second with 25.98% of the votes. The turnout stood at 70%.Last week, the Constitutional Court of Moldova recognized the results of the referendum, in which the country's residents supported changing the constitution in favor of European integration. More than a third of voters took part in the referendum, and the constitutional amendment was supported by the majority of participants in the referendum.The Moldovan Parliament will be dealing with the issues of the country's accession to the EU, including joining the bloc's founding treaties, after the Moldovan constitution is appropriately changed.At the October 20 referendum on Moldova’s accession to the EU, 50.46% of the country's citizens voted in favor of that decision, while 49.54% voted against it.
