The opposition, led by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS) and Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) parties' leaders Venancio Mondlane and Ossufo Momade, alleged electoral irregularities and fraud, media said.
The post-election protests in the East African nation resulted in at least 10 deaths, dozens of injuries and 500 arrests, according to local media citing the Centre for Public Integrity, a Mozambican non-governmental organization monitoring electoral processes.
The candidate of the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) party, Daniel Chapo, won the presidential elections held in Mozambique on October 9 by a wide margin, Mozambique's National Electoral Commission declared.
Following the declaration of the results, the opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane called for a week of nationwide protests from October 31, with a major rally in the capital Maputo on November 7, in which he would take part.
Social media users share footage of the local police allegedly using tear gas and traumatic weapons to disperse the crowd.
Last week, the ruling party's spokesperson called for peace and reconciliation and condemned the demonstrations that were taking place in different parts of the country. FRELIMO spokesperson Ludmila Maguni further condemned some political forces aimed at misinforming and discrediting the ongoing electoral process, per the local media.
