International law should be tougher in the face of these attacks, added the French journalist, who said he would like to see the creation of an independent international UN commission to investigate the problem.
On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, a French war reporter, Laurent Brayard, told Sputnik Africa about the situation of journalists in Ukraine.
"To be honest, I myself do not wear the press emblem on my helmet or anywhere else, because we are indeed priority targets. Ukrainians have demonstrated this repeatedly," he said.
There are many examples when
reporters were Ukrainian targets. Kiev authorities have a Mirotvorets list (which in translation means a peacemaker) that names thousands of journalists enemies. And this is a real problem for reporters in Ukraine, Brayard explained.
On social media, Laurent Brayard congratulated all war correspondents on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists and emphasized that this profession is crucially important and risky nowadays.
"Although journalism is a peaceful profession, it is one of the most dangerous today, and hundreds of our colleagues have given their lives to ensure that we know the truth. On this day, thousands of our colleagues are in virtually every hot spot in the world. They do not have combat weapons, but they risk no less than soldiers, often being in the most dangerous places, literally on the front line," he said.
