Moroccan King Mohammad VI and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari proposed this project in 2016. The length of the pipeline is expected to be over 5,600 km. The project is expected to assist in supplying gas to Morocco, thirteen West African countries and Europe.
The African Atlantic pipeline will be a successful project and bring prosperity to Africa, Leila Benali, a Moroccan minister of energy transition and sustainable development, said during a meeting of energy ministers from member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that took place in Nigeria's capital Abuja, the Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP) news agency reported.
"The Kingdom of Morocco is presented as a committed and proactive partner in ensuring the success of these connectivity and prosperity projects for Africa and the world," said Benali, as quoted by the MAP.
The minister reportedly pointed out that the project intends to open up new opportunities for the countries of the Sahel, providing them with access to Atlantic markets.
In 2023, ECOWAS said in a statement that Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Guinea, and Benin have signed memoranda of understanding with Morocco and Nigeria to participate in the flagship Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project. One year earlier, memoranda were concluded with ECOWAS, Mauritania, Senegal, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Ghana.
