UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia Starts Operations in Eastern African Country
14:41 02.11.2024 (Updated: 14:59 02.11.2024) Terrorism is one of the biggest problems that Somalia has been facing for a long time. Particularly, Al-Shabaab*, a Somalia-based jihadist militant group, wages armed resistance against the Somali government and obstructs UN humanitarian missions in the country.
The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) started
operations in the Eastern African country, the organization's press service said in a statement.
"UNTMIS reaffirms the UN’s commitment to the Government and people of Somalia in building a stronger country and better future," said the UN Secretary-General’s Acting Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan.
Swan added that the transitional mission is set to continue for two years.
According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia, the UNTMIS was established by the
UN Security Council on October 30.
In late September, a series of bomb
blasts took place in Somalia, resulting in the deaths of at least six people and injuries to another ten, according to local media reports.
