According to recent reports, weeks of heavier-than-usual seasonal rains, exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern, have caused flooding across Africa, with Chad, Mali, Guinea, Niger, Cameroon, Ghana and Liberia among the most affected countries, in addition to Nigeria.
In Nigeria, a series of floods have claimed 321 lives, with 1.374 million people affected in 34 of the country's 36 states. A total of 217 settlements suffered from the
disaster, Governor of Anambra State Chukwuma Soludo told correspondents after the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, according to local media.
"About 321 persons died and 2,854 persons were injured and 281,000 houses [were] affected; 258,000 cultivated farmland were also destroyed or affected by the ravaging flood," local media Premium Times Nigeria quoted Soludo as saying.
The governor also noted that 34 states, 217 local governments, 1,374,557 persons have been affected, and 740,743 people were
displaced nationwide.
To curb the devastating effects of flooding, the NEC directed the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation to embark on a comprehensive integrity review of the state of Nigeria's waterways and dams, the news outlet noted.
