The 16th BRICS Summit took place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24. This summit was particularly significant as it marked the first time Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE participated as members, following their accession in January. More than 32 countries, including the full members, took part in the summit.
The BRICS Summit in Russia's Kazan is a "perfect illustration" of the international paradigm shift, where the world is turning towards the organization, Sébastien Périmony, member of the Africa office of the French Solidarity and Progress party, told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.
"So we can see that the world is turning towards the East, towards Asia, towards the BRICS. This summit is a perfect illustration of this international paradigm shift, in which the global majority is increasingly united against a minority that is the bankrupt and increasingly war-mongering West," Sébastien Périmony stated.
What we hear in the West, particularly in France, is that Russia is isolated, but when you arrive here in Russia, you find yourself with 50% of the world's population, Périmony noted.
Sébastien Périmony also stated that the West is resisting the creation of the multipolar world.
"What the Western countries are trying to do is start a world war. We've seen NATO unleash wars in Libya, Iraq, Syria, and now against Russia in Ukraine. We can see it with what's happening in Israeli-Palestinian [conflict]. So we can see that the West is resisting the creation of this world, as we call it here, this multipolar world," Périmony said.
He highlighted that the fact that the current international monetary system relies heavily on the dollar, making the currency a tool of repression, can be a real obstacle for the Global South countries.
"The United States imposes sanctions on any country that resists it. And today, the major topic of debate for the BRICS is precisely the de-dollarization that could free the countries of the Global South from this financial hegemony," Sébastien Périmony stated.
Sébastien Périmony also touched on the topic of colonial influence on African countries, saying that the Western neo-colonial system kept the African countries in extreme poverty.
"There are fourteen former [French] colonies still under the tutelage of a colonial currency. The CFA franc, and these countries are among the poorest on the planet. Countries with uranium, wealth, and gold. Today, barely 20% of their populations have access to electricity, water or healthcare," Sébastien Périmony pointed out, recalling France's colonial past.
He noted that on the financial side, the BRICS bank, the New Development Bank, also offers a different approach than the IMF or the World Bank.
All this is a new opportunity for the countries of the Global South, and in particular Africa, to regain the sovereignty it lost during all those years of neo-colonialism, Périmony concluded.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin declared that the share of the BRICS in the world economy, in terms of purchasing power parity, will reach 36.7% in 2024, which exceeds that of the G7 countries.
