The March 23 Movement (M23) is an organization formed in 2012 by defectors from the Congolese army in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and allegedly backed by Rwanda. M23 units began fighting in eastern DRC in January 2021.
M23 rebels took control over Kalembe town in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the second time in a week, a local media reported.
According to the media, militiamen from the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland movement, commonly known as "Wazalendo," left the town after the fighting lasting for hours.
The media added that the regular army of the country wasn't involved in the fighting. Overall, three people reportedly died since clashes started on Sunday.
Earlier, the DRC's army spokesman, Sylvain Ekenge, reportedly said that Kalembe town was taken back on Monday after M23 rebels seized the settlement on Sunday morning.
Kabaki Alimasi, a representative of the Walikale territory where the town is located, told the local media that the army had retaken the settlement but said that military actions were still ongoing in the area.
