The House of Representatives Committee on Defense has confirmed that the DICON now has the capacity to produce ammunition and other military hardware locally, not only for Nigeria but for the entire West African region, according to media reports on Wednesday.This announcement follows an oversight visit by the Committee to several key military institutions in Kaduna, including the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA), the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and DICON.Chairman of the Committee, Babajimi Benson, stated that DICON’s progress in local manufacturing is a milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s defense capabilities and reducing dependency on foreign suppliers. Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting, he reportedly highlighted the importance of the newly signed DICON Act by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which provides a legal framework for expanding the corporation's production capacity.He added that DICON must continue to prioritize innovation, research, and development to meet the highest standards of quality and reliability in its products. The new legislation is expected to transform DICON into a multi-industrial complex, positioning Nigeria as a regional leader in defense technology.During the visit, Benson also underscored the economic benefits of boosting local production. The Committee also praised the Nigerian Defense Academy and the Armed Forces Command and Staff College for their roles in shaping Nigeria’s military leadership. Benson described the NDA as a "flagship military training institution" that produces highly capable officers who serve with distinction both at home and abroad. He noted that the Armed Forces Command and Staff College continues to develop strategic thinkers and leaders critical to national and international security efforts.Following the oversight visit, NDA Commandant, Major General John Ochai, expressed confidence that the Committee’s findings would help advance the institutions under review.He affirmed that the implementation of the new DICON Act would enhance collaboration with other defense establishments, both public and private.

ammunition and other military hardware locally, not only for Nigeria but for the entire West African region, according to media reports on Wednesday.
This announcement follows an oversight visit by the Committee to several key military institutions in Kaduna, including the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA), the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and DICON.
Chairman of the Committee, Babajimi Benson, stated that DICON’s progress in local manufacturing is a milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s defense capabilities and reducing dependency on foreign suppliers. "In today’s global security environment, the ability of a nation to manufacture its own defense equipment is crucial to its sovereignty and resilience," Benson reportedly said.
He added that DICON must continue to prioritize
innovation, research, and development to meet the highest standards of quality and reliability in its products. The new legislation is expected to transform DICON into a multi-industrial complex, positioning Nigeria as a regional leader in defense technology.
During the visit, Benson also underscored the economic benefits of boosting local production.
"DICON has the potential to make Nigeria self-sufficient in military hardware and software while also feeding the entire West African market. This will save foreign exchange and create opportunities for export," he was quoted as saying.
