Mozambican Opposition Candidate Mondlane Expects Revolution in His Country While Calling for Strike
18:58 23.10.2024 (Updated: 14:40 24.10.2024) Daniel Chapo, the presidential candidate for Mozambique’s ruling party, FRELIMO, led in all 11 provinces following the general election that took place on October 9, according to preliminary results released last week.
Venancio Mondlane, the Mozambican opposition independent candidate in the recent election, threatened a "revolution" in the country against the governing party, the Mozambique Liberation Front (
FRELIMO), as he called on a two-day nationwide strike to bring the economy to a halt, a local media reported.
"We are on the brink of revolution in Mozambique," Mondlane said, as quoted by the media. "An atmosphere that’s favorable for reform of the state. An atmosphere that’s favorable for the removal of the regime."
The politician called for a two-day demonstration on Thursday and Friday. It's expected that the protests will coincide with the announcement of the final results of general elections on October 24.
"The demonstrations will be decentralized, taking place in all districts and neighborhoods of the country, to avoid strong police intervention. There will not be enough armored vehicles to cover all neighborhoods," Mondlane reportedly said. "Starting on the 24th, we will raise the bar. We will paralyze the country for two days, stop all work, and this time, the demonstration will be in all districts."
According to the report, Mondlane said that the protests will be "peaceful," claiming that it was the police that were "violent" during recent protests.
"If the police continue to shoot at the protesters, the people will respond. We will give the CNE a great gift on the day the results are announced. [...] We are decreeing the opening of the doors of the revolution in Mozambique," he stressed.
Last week, Mondlane's legal adviser Elvino Dias and the official from the
opposition party, Podemos Paulo Guambe, were killed on Friday night in the city of Maputo by unknown individuals.
Notably, Mondlane claimed he would incite "a climate of terror" for 25 days, citing the 25 times he claimed his attorney, Elvino Dias, was shot.
According to the local media, President Filipe Nyusi repudiated the murders, demanding that law enforcement would reveal the circumstances of the crime. Regarding the demonstrations, Nyusi said that they were illegal.
According to preliminary results of the election, Mondlane is well behind ruling-party candidate Daniel Chapo in the presidential election. Since the nation's independence from Portugal in 1975, Chapo's party, the Mozambique Liberation Front, has held sway.
According to the election authorities, parties who feel wronged should provide proof of any electoral misconduct to the courts.
