The move comes in response to widespread complaints from consumers who were being denied the option of using their cards to make purchases.According to the commission, this action aims to protect consumers from the dangers and inconveniences associated with carrying large amounts of cash, promoting greater convenience and security in daily transactions. The commission cited concerns over businesses operating without POS machines, a violation of consumer rights and unfair trade practices. Zimbabwe's Consumer Protection Act specifically prohibits businesses from engaging in such practices, including denying customers the choice to pay electronically. The commission warned businesses of penalties for non-compliance, urging consumers to report businesses that continue to reject card payments. It encouraged them to use the provided hotline numbers to assist in the crackdown.
