According to him, for a long time, Russia and BRICS countries belonged to different groups at the UN Climate Change Conference and often held differing positions on many issues. He added, "This would allow us to present a united front at the crucial Conference of the Parties (COP) platform for the Paris Agreement, as well as other international climate negotiation tracks."The diplomat pointed out the recurring theme in international forums that humanity should change its socio-economic development paradigm. On October 20-21, the BRICS Scientific and Educational Congress on Ecology and Climate Change is being held in Sirius, Russia. The event brings together more than 400 leading experts from Russia, India, Brazil, Iran, and Ethiopia.
Sergey Kononuchenko, the Russian Foreign Minister’s Special Envoy for Climate Issues, has called for
BRICS nations to develop a unified position on climate issues, arguing that the bloc must counter the West's dominance in setting the agenda.
Speaking at the BRICS Scientific and Educational Congress on Ecology and Climate Change in Sirius, Kononuchenko highlighted the need for a consolidated approach, particularly given the West's influence on the global climate discourse. According to him, for a long time, Russia and BRICS countries belonged to different groups at the UN Climate Change Conference and often held differing positions on many issues.
"The situation has changed now, and I believe it's time for negotiators, as well as the broader scientific and educational community, to consider forming a truly comprehensive and consistent position on at least some of the climate issues," Kononuchenko said.
He added, "This would allow us to present a united front at the crucial Conference of the Parties (COP) platform for the Paris Agreement, as well as other international climate negotiation tracks."
The diplomat pointed out the recurring theme in international forums that humanity
should change its socio-economic development paradigm. However, he emphasized the need for critical analysis.
"If we approach this issue seriously and analytically, it becomes clear that the trends in this area are primarily set by Western countries... Perhaps it's time to join forces through science and business to develop a consistent position for all BRICS nations," he stated.
