BRICS is an intergovernmental organization created in 2006. Russia assumed the BRICS chairmanship on January 1, 2024. The year began with the accession of new members to the association – in addition to Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
Changing the name of BRICS requires consensus of all member countries of the association, but so far it remains the same, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.
"This is, of course, a question that requires a consensus decision by BRICS member countries, but there have been no proposals on this matter so far. It has been understood so far that the name should remain unchanged," Dmitry Peskov said.
He noted that the association is attractive to many countries today because it offers cooperation based on mutual respect, adding that international relations based on the dictates of one country over another are not accepted by many states today.
