Zambian Doctors Empowered by Russian Expertise to Reduce Maternal and Infant Mortality

A five-day seminar led by Russian medical experts, organized by the Russian Embassy and Russia’s federal agency for international cooperation in partnership with the Zambian Ministry of Health, is taking place in Lusaka, Zambia, focusing on obstetrics, gynecology, and neonatology.
Elizabeth Chibesakunda, a Senior Resident Medical Officer in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Chawama First Level Hospital, highlighted the immense value of the training conducted by Russian experts in Zambia.
"The seminar has been very informative and very practical," Chibesakunda told Sputnik Africa. "On the first day, we did resuscitation of the newborn… I need that for resuscitating the babies that are born with a very poor Apgar score."
Chibesakunda was particularly impressed by the new labor care guide introduced by the Russian experts. "One of the things that resonated a lot for me was the labor care guide because we're using the old model. The new one gives the mothers… quite some time to actually go through all the processes, and it reduces the number of cesarean fits," she explained.
According to the Zambian medical worker, the seminar, led by researchers from Russia's Health Ministry's research center for obstetrics, gynecology and perinatology, provided hands-on training and practical demonstrations, ensuring participants gained valuable skills.
"I am grateful for that because it shows us where we can actually help our women without us taking them to the theater for an operative procedure," Chibesakunda concluded.
