In July 2023, several factions of the Nigerien armed forces announced that they had seized power and suspended the constitution. Coup leader and current President Abdourahamane Tchiani cited growing insecurity in the country as the main reason for the takeover.
Niger's authorities accused nine officials from the former President Mohamed Bazoum's administration of espionage for a foreign country and conspiring against the current government. These officials, including former presidential guard head Karingama Wali Ibrahim and security adviser Rhissa Ag Boula, were stripped of their citizenship.
The Nigerien authorities accused them of undermining public order and
security, collaborating with foreign intelligence services to incite military action against the country, and facilitating foreign infiltration. The officials were also accused of demoralizing the army and spreading harmful information.
This followed the authorities' September declaration of 20 ousted officials as wanted, including former Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou and
Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massaoudou, for treason and conspiracy.
Bazoum and his wife remain under house arrest.
