The number of victims of Israeli army actions in the Palestinian enclave since the beginning of October 2023 is almost 42,000, most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health.
The UN Security Council must preserve what is left of its authority and impose a ceasefire in Gaza, stated Amar Bendjama, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
"We are witnessing a war crime in Gaza. The [UN Security] Council must act decisively to preserve what is left of its authority and impose a ceasefire in Gaza," Amar Bendjama said in New York, US.
Benjama accused "the Zionist entity" [Israel] of deliberately condemning Palestinians in Gaza to a slow death through starvation and a tightened blockade, preventing the delivery of humanitarian aid. He pointed out that only 52 trucks of aid reach Gaza daily.
"96% of the residents of the Gaza Strip face crises and extreme levels of food insecurity. This is a deliberate act," the diplomat added.
Algeria currently holds a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council and, in this capacity, pays particular attention to the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone and in Lebanon.
