Bolivia joined South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging that the Israeli offensive in Gaza is a violation of the UN Genocide Convention, the court said on Wednesday. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over 42,000 reported deaths in Gaza, primarily civilians, following Israel's military response to a Hamas attack that killed over 1,200 people in Israel. The crisis has prompted renewed calls for intervention from the ICJ and other international bodies. Bolivia already announced in November it was severing diplomatic ties with Israel over what it described as the "disproportionate" attacks on Gaza by Israel, media reported. South Africa filed its lawsuit against Israel in late December 2023, requesting emergency measures to stop the genocide in Gaza. On January 26, the court ordered Israel to take "all measures within its power" to prevent genocide in the region, as well as to promptly provide essential services and humanitarian aid.

This follows a January ruling by the ICJ, which ordered Israel to prevent genocide and allow UN investigators to look into allegations of such acts. Bolivia asserts that the situation constitutes a genocidal war and that Israel is ignoring the court's orders, Western media noted.
Bolivia joined South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging that the Israeli offensive in Gaza is a violation of the UN Genocide Convention, the court said on Wednesday.
“Bolivia filed a declaration of intervention in the case concerning the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel),” the statement read.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over
42,000 reported deaths in Gaza, primarily civilians, following Israel's military response to a Hamas attack that killed over 1,200 people in Israel.
The crisis has prompted renewed calls for intervention from the ICJ and other international bodies. Bolivia already announced in November it was severing diplomatic ties with Israel over what it described as the "disproportionate" attacks on Gaza by Israel, media reported.
