MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The European Union said on Tuesday it would prolong sanctions against six individuals and six entities in war-torn Sudan for another year over continuing hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
"The Council today decided to prolong the restrictive measures targeting those responsible for undermining the stability and political transition of Sudan, where fighting is still ongoing between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their respective affiliated militias," the statement read.
The restrictive measures will continue to apply until October 10, 2025. They include travel bans, asset freezes, and a ban on the provision of funds or other economic resources, whether directly or indirectly.
Clashes broke out between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in 2023. The warring parties have since introduced a number of temporary nationwide ceasefires, but none have held.
In late September, during their meeting on the fringes of the 79th UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed worry over the ongoing war in Sudan to Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the Sovereign Council of Sudan.
Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's intention to maintain long-standing good relations with Sudan and promised backing for attempts to bring an end to the fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
