Tunisia held its presidential election on October 6, with exit polls showing the incumbent, Kais Saied, leading with a commanding 89.2% of the vote. Saied was up against two candidates: Zouheir Magzaoui, the secretary-general of the left-wing Popular Movement, and Ayachi Zammel, who is currently serving a prison sentence for electoral fraud.
Tunisia's polling stations opened on time and that the election process ran quite smoothly, Mohammed al Telili al Manseri, a representative of the Independent High Electoral Commission of Tunisia, told Sputnik.
"All 513 polling stations opened on time, and work proceeded as usual," he said. "All violations were recorded and will be investigated. A decision on them will be made a little later; we have 21 days for this."
He noted that
the election, which cost 92 million dinars ($30 million), saw a turnout of 27.7%. This is an improvement over the 11% turnout in the legislative elections of 2011 and 2022. Al Manseri explained the increase due to two reasons.
"Firstly, due to the importance of the presidential elections, and secondly, we set up polling stations in tents in hard-to-reach areas and also involved Tunisians living abroad," he said.
Zammel, despite being sentenced to 12 years for falsifying his campaign sponsorship, remained
on the ballot due to the timing of the official ballot release. The final election results are set to be announced on Monday at 7:00 pm local time.
