Israel announced the start of a military ground operation in southern Lebanon, with reportedly no plans to occupy any areas of the country permanently. Tel Aviv claims that the operation aims to eliminate the Lebanese Hezbollah movement’s military capabilities.
Ethiopian Airlines announced on Friday the temporary suspension of flights to Beirut and Tel Aviv, citing the current situation in the region.
While flights to Beirut have been suspended indefinitely, service to Tel Aviv will resume on October 7. The suspension comes amid a continuing escalation in the
military conflict between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement.
"We are closely monitoring developments and are in contact with the relevant authorities," the airliner said in a statement on Friday.
The airline's statement acknowledged the inconvenience and offered passengers full refunds for cancelled bookings. It encouraged travelers to monitor flight status online and prepare for possible changes.
The situation on the
Israeli-Lebanese border aggravated after the start of Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The Israeli military and Hezbollah fighters exchange fire almost daily in areas along the border.
Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed more than 1,000 people in the past two weeks, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Tuesday.
