South Africa's first electric minibus taxi, the eKamva, was unveiled at the Smarter Mobility Africa summit. Developed by South African startup GoMetro in partnership with a consortium of companies and research institutions, the eKamva is part of a new integrated electric vehicle (EV) business model and charging infrastructure solution called flx EV.GoMetro CEO Justin Coetzee highlighted the potential for the eKamva to create a new economic sector, while company's data showed that switching to electric taxis could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 13.7 tonnes per vehicle annually. Project lead Rudi Kriel also emphasized the EV's lower running costs, fewer breakdowns, and improved air quality, ultimately benefiting both operators and the environment.The eKamva signifies an advancement towards a greener future for transportation in sub-Saharan Africa, supporting global efforts to address climate change, according to the local media.
