Speaking to Sputnik Africa during his participation in the International BRICS School in Moscow, Dr. Maharajh highlighted the unique strengths of BRICS in fostering a diverse and inclusive knowledge
exchange framework. He emphasized that each member country brings its own distinct cultural and historical context, creating a rich tapestry of perspectives.
"As the BRICS and now the BRICS Plus increasingly come to represent a global majority in terms of that 8.1 billion of us, and it'll become more important and relevant for us not only to preserve, but also for us to defend the knowledge commons and for us to act against any restrictions on the flow of information," Dr. Maharajh stated.
He expressed hope that BRICS can serve as a platform for promoting equitable development and challenging existing power structures. The
BRICS plus allows for a dialogue of equals, not a dialogue of dominance, he stressed.
Dr. Maharajh also discussed the growing interest of African nations in joining BRICS, viewing it as a crucial step towards achieving peace and prosperity on the continent. He highlighted the dangers of "external forces" perpetuating conflicts in Africa, emphasizing the need for a more equitable and just global order.
"So I think what the countries from Africa are increasingly wanting to be part of BRICS; they are also seeing the pathway towards a peaceful, a pathway towards prosperity, not something driven by conflict," he stated.
He further emphasized the potential for the
BRICS to strengthen the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, enabling greater economic integration and accelerating Pan-African unity.
