The impeachment drive comes amidst growing tensions between Kenyan President William Ruto and his deputy, reportedly stemming from Rigathi Gachagua's perceived diminished influence since Ruto formed a coalition government with the opposition.
A motion to impeach Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was filed in parliament on Tuesday, sparking a major political crisis. The motion accuses Gachagua of inciting ethnic tensions and undermining the government by contradicting President William Ruto publicly.
Gachagua reportedly played a crucial role in Ruto's 2022 election victory. However, his recent public statements, including suggestions that those who voted for the ruling coalition deserve preferential treatment in jobs and development projects, have drawn criticism and fueled the rift.

The motion, signed by over 83% of parliament members, surpasses the required threshold for a vote. If passed by a two-thirds majority in the lower house, the charges will be presented to the senate, potentially leading to an investigation and a final impeachment vote.
The impeachment process is expected to include public participation and a response from Gachagua before a final decision is made.
