The meeting reportedly took place in the wake of recent border confrontations between the two nations, with the South Sudanese army accusing the Ugandan People's Defense Forces of advancing into their territory.
On Saturday, discussions were held between General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defense Forces (PDF) in Uganda, and General Santino Deng Wol, the PDF in South Sudan, the Ugandan military announced.

The focus of the meeting was on "regional security issues of mutual interest," according to the CDF's office.

“The two military leaders acknowledged the longstanding relationship between Uganda and South Sudan, committing to further enhancing military-to-military relations,” it added.

Declaring that "we are one people," the South Sudanese commander emphasized the ties between Ugandans and South Sudanese citizens.

According to the press release, at the official dinner, Gen. Santino stated that he was astounded to see so many South Sudanese in Arua Park, Kampala, during one of his visits. He expressed his gratitude to Gen. Kainerugaba for the kind welcome and that he had gotten excellent treatment.
There have been boundary conflicts between Uganda and South Sudan that have led to violence and conflict in the past, local media reported.
The conflict is reportedly rooted in historical arrangements made during colonial times, when borders were drawn without consultation with local populations. This has led to tensions among various ethnic groups who inhabit these areas, especially in areas like Lamwo, Nimule, Kajo-Keji and Moyo district.
The Ugandan army team at the meeting in Mbuya was comprised of the deputy CDF Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi, the Deputy Commander Land Forces Maj. Gen. Francis Takirwa and the Chief of Defense Intelligence and Security Maj. Gen. James Birungi.
The South Sudanese army chief was, on the other hand, accompanied by his senior military officials.
