BRICS was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. Egypt, Iran, the UAE, and Ethiopia became full members of the bloc on January 1, 2024. Saudi Arabia is not a formal member of the group but has been taking part in its events.
Azerbaijan is interested in joining BRICS as the organization plays a significant role in world politics and economy, the head of the press service of the country’s Foreign Ministry, Ayhan Hajizadeh, told local media.
The country submitted a formal application for BRICS membership to the BRICS chairman on April 2 this year, the spokesman said. The fact that more than 30 other states have applied for membership and the presence of countries of considerable importance in the world economy proves the growing interest in the organization.

"The current members of BRICS are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. BRICS covers more than 30% of the world's territory, about 43% of its population, and 26% of its GDP. The member states of the organization have great natural resources, a large domestic market, and labor reserves, and some members have high-tech industries," he noted.
