Previously a British protectorate, Somaliland joined with Italian Somalia in 1960 following their independence, but separated in 1991 amid a civil war. Since then, it has been striving for international recognition to access foreign funding and aid.
The presidential election in the breakaway African region will proceed as planned on November 13, two years later than originally scheduled, the republic's president said.
Last Saturday, the National Elections Commission officially awarded certificates of candidacy to candidates from the three national parties.
"I received the certificate of candidacy for the President of the Republic of Somaliland. Ready to serve the people in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for November 13, 2024. Together, we can build a brighter future and a recognized nation," Muse Bihi Abdi, Somaliland's president, wrote on X.
Among those running is Muse Bihi Abdi of the ruling Kulmiye Party, who has been in office since December 2017.

South Sudan Postpones National Election to 2026
South Sudan's elections were initially scheduled to occur a month after Somaliland's, but president Salva Kiir's office announced last Saturday that the elections would be delayed by two years. This postponement is to allow time to complete essential tasks needed for a successful election and comes amid ongoing challenges in the nation's peace process.
