Pagume comprises five or six extra days added at the year's end to synchronize with the solar cycle. Rooted in the Coptic and ancient Egyptian calendars, Pagume corrects yearly discrepancies, ensuring alignment with the earth's rotation. These days are traditionally celebratory, leading up to the Ethiopian New Year.
On Pagume 3, known as
Ethiopia's Sovereignty Day, the country's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took to social media to underscore the nation's unwavering commitment to defending its sovereignty.
In his
post on X, Abiy emphasized that the name Ethiopia has long been synonymous with "honor, excellence, and freedom."
"Throughout its history, Ethiopia has maintained its sovereignty and never invaded another country. However, it has always defended itself against those who threatened its sovereignty. And this will continue to be upheld by the united efforts of its people," he continued.
Pagume, the thirteenth month of the Ethiopian calendar, holds special significance as it marks the transition from the old year to the new. This period is deeply rooted in both cultural and religious traditions. The PM also highlighted that sovereignty is not just about
defending national borders but extends to all spheres of life, including food, technology, and budget sovereignty.
As Ethiopia moves forward, Abiy’s words remind the nation of the importance of unity and collective effort in safeguarding the country's rich heritage and ensuring its continued prosperity.
