US Designates Sputnik, RIA Novosti, RT as 'Foreign Missions'
11:35 05.09.2024 (Updated: 15:28 05.09.2024) WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The State Duma's foreign affairs committee head, Leonid Slutsky, has called the US sanctions on Russian media a vivid example of censorship and pressure on freedom of speech.
The United States has designated
Rossiya Segodnya and its subsidiaries Sputnik and RIA Novosti as "foreign missions," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Wednesday.
"The department has designated the operational presence of Rossiya Segodnya and its subsidiaries, Ria Novosti, RT, TV-Novosti, Ruptly, and Sputnik as foreign missions, as they are effectively controlled by the government of the Russian Federation," Miller told a briefing.
Miller added that the entities designated under the Foreign Missions Act must inform the Department of State about all personnel working in the
United States and disclose real property they hold.
Furthermore, the United States is imposing
visa restrictions on Russia’s Rossiya Segodnya news agency, RT and their subsidiaries, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday.
"The Department’s actions include introducing a new visa restriction policy, Foreign Missions Act determinations of RT’s parent company Rossiya Segodnya, and other subsidiaries RIA Novosti, RT, TV-Novosti, Sputnik and Ruptly, and announcing a Rewards for Justice offer," Blinken said in a statement.
Blinken accused the media outlets of "covert influence operations."
Earlier on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it is not Russia’s job to interfere in US elections and that the winners will be chosen by the American people. In July, Peskov called accusations of Russian interference in US elections "absurd" and rejected them.
