This surge in maize production is attributed to favorable weather conditions and government support for farmers, including subsidized fertilizers.
Kenya is poised for a record
maize harvest this year, with Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Dr. Andrew Karanja predicting a yield of 70 million bags, a 20 million bag increase from previous years.
The head of the Ministry of Agriculture highlighted the positive impact of government programs during a tour of Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) and Kenya Seed Company (KSC) farms in Trans-Nzoia County.
He praised the collaboration between these entities and other stakeholders in bolstering the country's
agricultural sector.
"As the government, we will offer the necessary support to KSC and ADC to ensure they discharge their mandate in the agricultural sector," Karanja said, adding that the good production was an indicator that the country was now food secure.
To further support farmers, the government plans to increase the supply of subsidized fertilizer at a reduced price. The KSC is also preparing for the next planting season by harvesting 70 million kilos of seed maize, while ADC is expected to produce 10 million kilos.
