Interest in African baobab tree powder and products is rapidly growing worldwide, thanks to the tree's rich nutritional profile and its unique ability to thrive in harsh environments. As consumers increasingly seek natural and health-boosting ingredients, baobab is emerging as a superfood with economic potential for African communities.
The increasing demand for baobab powder and its products can be attributed to a lot of factors, Dr. Daniel Micheal Okello, assistant lecturer of Agricultural Economics, Kabale University, Uganda, tells Global South Pole.

“The current demand for the baobab powder as well as its associated products has been increasing and is actually expanding due to a number of factors, including consumers being sensitive about what they consume. And that is partly due to a rise in the number of the middle-class people who tend to be more critical about whatever they consume so that they're able to remain healthy,” Okello explains.

The Ugandan further says that African countries exporting these products to overseas markets earn substantial income due to rising demand. He emphasizes that this trend is expected to grow as more uses for the product are discovered and innovations continue to expand its applications in various food products.
Despite the many potential opportunities in the market, Dr. Okello stresses that there are some challenges, ranging from access to modern technology to the quantity and quality of the product, that farmers in this sector have to overcome.

“To help them, governments and also private sectors or even non-state actors should come to address those challenges in relation to their access to technology that they need to be able to process these products, technologies, with respect to how to produce and maintain and also conserve the tree, but also best harvesting practices,” he says.
