The Comoros is Interested in Visa-Free Travel With Russia, Russian Embassy Says
14:08 29.08.2024 (Updated: 16:30 29.08.2024) Comoros and Russia diplomatic relations were established post-Comoros independence in 1975. Cooperation has primarily focused on fisheries, education, and health. Trade remains minimal, with potential for development in these and other sectors.
The Comoros is interested in visa-free travel with Russia, a topic discussed during bilateral contacts, as reported by the Russian diplomatic mission in Madagascar, which currently represents Russia's interests in the East African country.
Moscow is considering opening an embassy in the Comoros amid an expanding diplomatic presence in Africa. Despite infrastructural challenges, Comorian entrepreneurs
seek to boost tourism and attract more Russian visitors. Overall, Moscow aims to deepen ties with African nations.
"There is interest from the Comoros. A positive outcome is possible, but it requires further consideration," Dmitry Detsina, Second Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Madagascar, said.
Currently, visas can be obtained upon arrival at the airport for around €30.
"There's tourism potential, with local entrepreneurs developing guesthouses. They are keen to attract Russian tourists. We've engaged with our Chamber of Commerce and tour operators, but so far, there's been limited interest from Russian partners," Detsina added.
