MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Namibia has blocked an arms-carrying vessel destined for Israel from entering the country's ports, Namibian news outlet New Era reported on Tuesday, citing the local authorities.
Last week, Namibia's Justice Minister Yvonne Dausab addressed the relevant state departments, calling on them to ban the MV Kathrin vessel from docking in Namibia's waters. The vessel was delivering explosive materials for Israel, the country's authorities reportedly established as a result of the investigation carried out by the Namibian police.
The decision to deny the vessel the right to enter Namibia's waters completely corresponds with the country's stance towards the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the media reported, adding that Namibia strongly opposes the Israeli military actions in Gaza.
The media has no information on the sender of the weapons or the departure point.
On October 7, 2023, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. Following this, fighters from the Palestinian movement Hamas infiltrated border areas, opening fire on military and civilian targets, and captured more than 250 hostages. According to authorities, approximately 1,200 people were killed.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation "Iron Swords" in the Gaza Strip. Israel declared a total blockade of the enclave, halting the supply of water, electricity, fuel, food, and medicine. According to the health authorities in Gaza, the death toll from Israeli strikes in the enclave since October 7 has exceeded 40,400, with more than 93,500 people injured.
