09:32 28.08.2024 (Updated: 12:18 28.08.2024) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On Monday, the Sudanese Health Ministry said that 132 people had died as a result of heavy rains and floods in the country. The ministry added that more than 12,400 houses were completely destroyed due to the continuing torrential rains.
About 20 villages were destroyed and 30 people died after a dam collapsed near the city of Port Sudan in northeastern Sudan, the
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
"The Arba’at Dam near Port Sudan in the Red Sea State was damaged on Sunday due to heavy rains, collapsed and flooded downstream communities … Local authorities report that 70 villages around the dam have been affected – 20 of them have been destroyed, while 70 schools have also been damaged or destroyed and thousands of animals are missing," OCHA said in a statement on Tuesday.
