Nairobi residents will soon see a major improvement in their water supply with the completion of the Northern Water Collector Tunnel, the local media reported. This project will add an extra 140 million liters of water daily to the city's distribution system.During a tour of the Gigiri reservoir and pumping station, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja assured residents that the additional supply will help alleviate chronic water shortages in areas like Eastlands, Kabete, and Lang’ata.Sakaja noted that the Tunnel would solve 85% of Nairobi's water needs, although population growth could still lead to rationing. He also announced that partners in Southeast Asia have pledged over $100 million to support Nairobi’s water infrastructure, which is crucial as the city is expected to grow to 10 million people by 2050.Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director Engineer Nahashon Muguna confirmed that the integration of the new water supply is on track for completion by October.

Nairobi to Gain Additional 140 Million Liters of Water Daily With New Collector Built
14:16 23.08.2024 (Updated: 14:48 23.08.2024) Nairobi faces recurring water shortages due to rapid population growth, aging infrastructure, and limited water sources. Issues like over-reliance on the Ndakaini Dam, pollution, and rainfall variability exacerbate the crisis. Efforts include infrastructure upgrades and new water projects like the Northern Collector Tunnel.
Nairobi residents will soon see a major improvement in their water supply with the completion of the Northern Water Collector Tunnel, the
local media reported.
This project will add an extra 140 million liters of water daily to the city's distribution system.
During a tour of the Gigiri reservoir and pumping station, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja assured residents that the additional supply
will help alleviate chronic water shortages in areas like Eastlands, Kabete, and Lang’ata.
"Residents who received water only once a week can expect supplies two or three times a week," said Sakaja.
Sakaja noted that the Tunnel would solve 85% of Nairobi's water needs, although population growth could still lead to rationing. He also announced that partners in Southeast Asia have pledged over $100 million to support Nairobi’s water infrastructure, which is crucial as the city is expected to grow to 10 million people by 2050.
Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director Engineer Nahashon Muguna confirmed that
the integration of the new water supply is on track for completion by October.
"We are committed to ensuring this project is ready within the next eight weeks," said Muguna, promising much-needed relief for Nairobi's residents.
