WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Washington has never discussed with Baghdad the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq as part of bilateral talks on the future of the US-Iraqi military partnership, State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said on Wednesday.
"We have held discussions with the Government of Iraq on the future of Operation Inherent Resolve since last year. This includes when Prime Minister [Mohammed Shia' Al] Sudani met with President [Joe] Biden here in [Washington] DC in April, and at no point did we discuss the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq," Patel said during a press briefing.
In the beginning of August, a rocket attack occurred on a military base hosting US troops amid high tensions in the Middle East as the region braces for a possible Iranian counterattack on Israel after the killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
The rocket attack followed a US strike in Iraq, which targeted combatants attempting to launch drones that threatened American and allied troops. This strike, reported to have killed four, was the first by US forces in Iraq since February.
Attacks on US troops were more frequent in the early months of the Gaza crisis, with over 175 incidents. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a group of pro-Iran factions, claimed most of these attacks in support of Palestinians.
